The Glory of God Psalm 19 is one of my favourites because it is a reminder that at one and the same time God is the creator and sustainer of the universe, but also intimately concerned with my life. The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun. It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber, like a champion rejoicing to run his course. It rises at one end of the heavens and makes its circuit to the other; nothing is deprived of its warmth. Psalm 19: 1-6 [NIV] We used to live near Magna Park distribution centre and the lights were kept on all night, meaning that we never got to see a proper night sky because of the light pollution. One Christmas we were driving to stay with family in Cornwall and we just had to stop in a layby, get the children out and stare at the stars in a perfect, dark sky. It was truly awe inspiring! I could never tire of seeing a spectacle like that. Other times I've been humbled in the natural world include watching the waves crashing on the beach in a storm; or standing under the branches of a huge tree; or watching a butterfly emerge from a cocoon, or watching the sun rise over a frosty field…. Thank you God for displaying your glory in creation. Mairi Mowbray | |
