God my rock May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer. Psalm 19: 14 [NIV] These words are familiar to many in the form of a prayer preachers frequently use before starting their sermon, reminding preacher and listener that they are doing their best to understand the ways of God, and interpret them in a contemporary and understandable way, but that they might inadvertently get things wrong! People these days often refer to a valued and trusted friend as a rock. It's a great compliment. It is the subject of many popular songs. It means that they are someone that they can confide in, open up to, rely on. They support them when they fall. That person holds them together no matter what. It is an image that originates in the Bible – the Christian understanding is that the rock, the trusted and valued friend is Jesus. You might like to reflect on God my Rock as you listen to this video. It has amazing images of a boat tossed on a sea! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0b2GFdxuVk Mairi Mowbray | |
