[Wednesday's Devotional] -  Our God can be trusted

Our God can be trusted

The fear of the Lord is pure,
    enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
and all of them are righteous.

They are more precious than gold,
    than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,
    than honey from the honeycomb.
Psalm 19: 9-10 [NIV]

Our culture can make us suspicious of others motives, always looking over our shoulder, assuming that harm is lurking.  It makes it hard to believe we can trust anyone.  Can God be trusted?  Of course says the Psalmist.  Nothing is more reliable than our God.  Perhaps we are put off by the language -  in the two verses above we see fear, decrees, firm, righteous, words we may associate with legalism and dreariness.  When we think of God we ought to think positive rather than think negative.

Compare the following translation from the Message with more contemporary illustrations:

God's reputation is twenty-four-carat gold,
    with a lifetime guarantee.
The decisions of God are accurate
    down to the nth degree.

God's Word is better than a diamond,
better than a diamond set between emeralds.
You'll like it better than strawberries in spring,
    better than red, ripe strawberries.
Psalm 19: 9-10 [The Message]

God, remind us that following you is not about being constantly wary of breaking laws, but about enjoying the results of good choices and that your laws are about our safety and protection.
