[Wednesday's Devotional] - It Drives Away Our Fears

It Drives Away Our Fears

"There are only two emotions: love and fear. All positive emotions come from love, all negative emotions from fear."
Elisabeth Kübler-Ross

Elisha found himself in a situation where he was completely surrounded by enemy troops, I'm sure most of us would be fearful in such circumstances, yet he remained calm and relaxed. If you have time read the full story in 2 Kings 6:8-22, it's only short yet it makes me laugh every time for many reasons, there is much of God's humour in it.

Elisha's servant was not so calm at the sight of this hostile army with vicious-looking warriors and innumerable battle-chariots on every side.

Undaunted, Elisha said to him:
"Don't be afraid. Those who are with us are more than those who are with them".

Elisha then prayed to God:
"'O Lord, open his eyes so he may see.' Then the Lord opened the servant's eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha"
2 Kings 6:16-17 [NIV]

God was protecting Elisha and his servant with a whole army of magnificent angelic beings!

Unlike many people today, Elisha was not a slave to the visible and the tangible.

I wonder what happened to the young servant after his glimpse of the holy army was over, did he merely go back to living in fear or was 'his troubled breast calmed' knowing that God had his back?

What if we spotted His angels encamped all around? What if we saw him sitting beside us? We can and he does.

Tozer was right when he said that:

"a spiritual kingdom lies all about us, enclosing us, embracing us, altogether within reach of our inner selves, waiting for us to recognise it. God Himself is here waiting our response to His Presence. This eternal world will come alive to us the moment we begin to reckon upon its reality."

Elisha had a simple, childlike faith in a living God, he was:
"sure of what he hoped for and certain of what he did not see" Hebrews 11:1 [NIV]
