To the Weary, Rest (and Ice Cream!) I've had a very busy week in our new home navigating around cardboard boxes while working remotely for my old school, applying for jobs, making roses, attending interviews and trying to find all the things I need to function from numerous boxes, each one a surprise to open as I didn't pack them. For an organiser like me it is fair to say I have been out of my comfort zone! Just 10 minutes away is Olney, as I drive through I always smile as I'm greeted with this welcome. It's where John Newton penned the famous 'Olney Hymns' including 'How Sweet the Name of Jesus Sounds', it's also his final earthly resting place. How do we rest? Thursday is my 'Nana duty' day (I love it). I drove over to Rugby and had a wonderful playtime with Reggie but after a couple of hours I felt exhausted, moving is hard work! I took him out in his pushchair (hoping he'd fall asleep). As we left the house I declared 'Nana's taking you for ice-cream' of course at only 5 months old Nana wasn't, but the idea of something 'sweet' was appealing. A long walk later, Reggie was still wide awake, but while walking I had been able to pray and spend time in God's presence, I felt peace. We ended up at St. John the Baptist in Hillmorton, where Reggie was Christened. I sat on a bench as I needed rest, I looked at Reggie, he didn't! I closed my eyes briefly and thanked God for our precious day in that church and those who had encountered His presence that day. When I opened my eyes I saw my grandson was fast asleep and I heard God's humour, the tune of 'Just one Cornetto' was playing from the unseen Ice-cream van, I said 'That's you isn't it?' and the music got lounder as the van grew nearer. We all know many 'rest for the weary' scriptures but do we do that rest? In our 'I don't have enough time' days, do we find any rest? This weekend our sweet Lord invites us out for ice-cream time.
