Creativity Every month we have a range of hands-on activities to explore Bible stories, to reflect a God of creativity and to give people a chance to play together. For example, at Advent, we made lacy angels out of clay to hang on the Christmas tree. Increasingly children are less likely to construct, paint, model and make a mess at home, so having the freedom to do so at Messy Church is very liberating. (We owe a huge debt of gratitude to those who clear up all the tables at the end of the session). Why is creativity important? I think it is because our God is a creative God and we strive to be like him. The imagination of God is amazing – you only have to look at the natural world to know that - Planet Earth - the series on natural history is phenomenally popular as people marvel at the variety of life forms on this beautiful planet. Being creative is a way of expressing our feelings and emotions in ways that don't demand words or even understanding. Through the creative arts of art, dance, music we can communicate our passion and excitement about the world around us and we can express our awe and wonder, our joy and our thankfulness in a way that speaks to God and to others, especially those who don't belong to a book culture. To think and pray about: Do we allow people to give rein to their creativity in our church activities and worship? Mairi Mowbray | |
