Creation is something that we often are challenged about. How can you reconcile the biblical account from Genesis with the evolutionary evidence and the apparent age of the earth?
My own view is that God created the universe, our world and everything it. Did he do it in 6 days? I don't know – since he is outside time then I don't think that need cause him a problem. It is interesting to reflect that the definition of a day is the time the earth takes to rotate once on it's axis – and the definition of a year is the time it takes our planet to orbit the Sun. On the planet Mercury, for example, sunrise to sunrise takes 176 of our days, yet it goes round the Sun every 88 days. That means a day on Mercury is longer than a year on Mercury! We are so steeped in the linear nature of time as viewed on Earth that we can't really understand how a timeless creator can operate.
Looking at the world around us generally, and living things in particular, I am often amazed at how much of creation speaks of the presence of a creator. The idea of everything in the universe being the result of chance offends my sense of statistics and probability – even though the infinite monkey theorem may be mathematically valid. I was recently at the Opticians (Phil Gregg) having an annual photo of my retina - looking at the intricacies of the interior of the eye, I am amazed at the level of detail and the technical capabilities of the human eye, just one of our amazing organs. Not to mention the wonder of reproduction – where we can witness the creation of new life taking place before our very eyes.
The natural world also shows us how tenuous life is and how "acts of God" can destroy the man-made cities and landscapes (as witnessed in East coast USA recently). Life as we know it depends on the grace of God preventing the earth from freezing or boiling over, as a consequence of the relative position of the Earth and the Sun and the subtle complexities of the ozone layer, the atmosphere and the Moon.
Do you know your creator?
Lord, thank you for everything you have made around us and for creating us in your image. Help us to tell others about your creative genius. Amen.
