One of the problems of relying on descriptions of God from the Old Testament is that it gives us a historical view of God – as if he is somehow old fashioned or "out of date". It would be a mistake to think of God merely as someone who lived a long time ago – since as well as being God of the past, he is God of the future and outside our concept of time.
As God has revealed scientific knowledge, so man has become more proud and looks back at the God of history as old-fashioned. However all knowledge comes from God and he is more advanced than we can imagine. In the same way, we can be influenced by historical writings about heaven and hell – and because they were written hundreds of years ago, and the language and imagery is old fashioned, it can seem unreal to us today. Perhaps you can imagine a visitor from 400 years ago trying to describe a mobile phone or a laptop computer – although they would be using imagery and descriptions based on their knowledge and environment, they would only be limited by their knowledge and understanding.
Do you have a limited view of God? Does it affect how you think of him?
Lord, help us to honour and worship you – thank you for all you have done for us, are doing for us and will do for us. Amen
