I remember John Coles playing a recording entitled "That's My King!" at our church weekend away (at the Pioneer Centre in 2006?) and I hunted it down on Google to share it with you. I strongly recommend that if you have around 6 minutes to spare, you will not regret it - and whether or not you have heard it before, they will probably be the best 6 minutes of your week.
The recording was from a sermon given in 1976 (hence the audio quality is not great) and the preacher is the late S.M. Lockridge. I learn from Wikipedia that the initials stand for Shadrach Meschach – two of the three martyrs from the fiery furnace in Daniel 3, and that he was a Baptist minister in San Diego.
You can listen to the six minutes of "That's My King!" on YouTube or read a full transcript here.
The point is that words cannot adequately describe God, I am reminded of the words of Paul to the Corinthians:
Now all we can see of God is like a cloudy picture in a mirror. Later we will see him face to face. We don't know everything, but then we will, just as God completely understands us.
1 Corinthians 13:12 [CEV]
Although we cannot know God fully, there is so much we can see of his character from the Bible, from Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit – and the adjectives and descriptive picture in the above talk give us more than a clue as to what "My King" is like.
S.M. Lockridge asks "do you know Him?" Well, do you?
Lord God, reveal yourself to me so that I may see you more clearly and tell others more accurately about you. Thank you for being my King. Amen
Dave MacLellan
