Paul's prayer for the Thessalonians If you're a parent or carer for someone then you will know what it is like to lie awake at night worrying about them. This is exactly what Paul is doing here; he's concerned for their safety but also for their continuing faith, he's anxious that they will have been tempted away from God. Paul realises it's not safe enough for him to travel so he sends Timothy, who thankfully returns with great news of their faith and love. Paul responds to this good news with prayer: 'May the Lord make your love increase and overflow for each other and for everyone else, just as ours does for you. May he strengthen your hearts so that you will be blameless and holy in the presence of our God and Father when our Lord Jesus comes with all his holy ones.' 1 Thessalonians 3:12-13 [NIV] It's not that the Thessalonians faith isn't good enough (v10), but Paul is just saying that faith needs to grow each day and that he wants to encourage them in that. Think of a fellow believer whom you care about, pray Paul's prayer for them today. Emma Higgins | |
