Mockers, fools and the simple Sometimes it is easier to teach someone what to do by showing or telling them what not to do. Proverbs makes use of this device. There is the wise man, who heeds advice and does the right thing, and prospers; and then there are his opposites: the men who do not value the truth and who suffer the consequences. These people are the mockers, the fools and the simple. What kind of people are they? (And do we see ourselves in any of them?) The simple are the least harmful group; they live without thinking and are too lazy to change. But they will end up sorry. Fool is one of the Bible's worst insults. People become fools by ignoring the wisdom God offers them, preferring to follow the crowd or their own conceited opinions. They may think themselves very clever but their complacency will land them in trouble. The waywardness of the simple will kill them and the complacency of fools will destroy them, Proverbs 2:32 [NIV] The mockers are perhaps the worst, because they are rebels against God and they make their feelings known to everyone, influencing others' behaviour for the worse. They mock God, but look what happens to them - God turns his face away from them. (Proverbs 1:22-27). Far better to be the wise man. Mairi Mowbray | |
