Wisdom "If you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God". Proverbs 2:3-5 [NIV] Proverbs is one of the most down to earth books in the Bible. It gives advice on many ordinary, everyday things from how to get on in your family to how to successfully make your way in the world. It isn't the most orderly book, because it jumps around from theme to theme in an apparently haphazard way. Strangely, it doesn't mention God that often either, it just tells us how life works out most of the time, but nevertheless, it is an exhortation to seek wisdom and live a godly life. If you spend some time flicking through, you will find wonderful insights on life much better than any fridge magnet or modern inspirational sayings. Wisdom in the secular sense is to do with experience, knowledge and good judgement. In the Bible, it is about knowing God's ways. The book of Proverbs begins as advice being passed down from father to son, but wisdom is not just something you gain by growing old, it is something to strive for at any age. The Book of Proverbs opens with the words: "The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel; for attaining wisdom and discipline; for understanding words of insight; for acquiring a disciplined and prudent life, doing what is right and just and fair…." Proverbs 1:1-3 [NIV] This week let us see what wisdom we can attain. Mairi Mowbray | |
