God is the source of Wisdom The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom Proverbs 9:10 [NIV] "Trust in the Lord with all your heart And lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge him And he will make your paths straight" Proverbs 3:5 [NIV] If you go to a bookshop, the chances are there will be quite a large section of self-help books advising you how to make a success of your life through diet, exercise, meditation techniques and more. Proverbs may sound like another set of "how-to"s, but if you look at the book as a whole, rather than as a set of unrelated fragments, you will see that wise living cannot be separated from God. While some proverbs observe the hard facts of life – that bribes are effective, for instance, or that money does buy friends of a kind – the book never for a moment endorses success techniques that involve immorality. Wisdom starts with the fear of God. This does not mean a Victorian style fear of despotic parent, but a right acknowledgement of who God is and a willingness to learn and to do what is right. I wonder if anyone ever attains Wisdom – finding the knowledge of God (2:5) – or whether it is an aspiration we can spend our whole life trying to achieve? Mairi Mowbray | |
