For opening her home and supporting Elisha the man of God, the Shunamite woman was blessed with the secret petitions and desires of her heart.
Despite many attempts to conceive a baby, all in vain, God eventually made it possible for this woman to have a son. After all hope had gone, the blessing came unexpectedly one day when the man of God and his servant had a conversation which went something like, “For her concern for us what can be done for this woman?” Elisha then spoke a word of prophecy which enabled the woman to bear a son the following year.
Here is a word of encouragement. For every good work you have done to extend God’s Kingdom, know that God remembers everything and conversations are always taking place in heaven over the good things you have done.
When her son later died, Elisha prayed to God and the child was resurrected. God came to meet her in her time of greatest need and He did so promptly. The response to her was that of someone well known and very close to God. Call upon My Name in the day of trouble and I will answer you, says the Lord. Its all about relationship.
Several years later when there was a famine in Israel, the Shunamite woman was given a warning by Elisha to leave the country and go somewhere to preserve her life and family. For the good you have done know that God will reward you with guidance in whatever you do.
After the famine was over seven years later, the woman came back to Israel and the first thing she did was to go to the king to ask for her land to be given back. By Divine providence when she walked into the king’s office, Gehazi, Elisha’s servant was talking to the king about how Elisha had resurrected the Shunamite woman’s son! That was no coincidence or luck, but favour from the Lord.
You can find this story in 2 Kings 4: 8 – 37; 8: 1 – 6.
