I didn’t originally plan to stay with Betjeman for a third day, but as this is one of Jim Finch’s favourite poems, and as it is harvest time, I decided that I would. The Diary of a Church Mouse is about the frugal life of a mouse that lives in a vestry cupboard in a church. The only time of year that he feasts is harvest time when the church is decorated and other rodents make their yearly trip to church to eat the produce that decorates the church. Take a read:
For prayer…Having read it, you might like to prayerfully reflect on these questions.
Which character in the story do you most identify with?
What would you say to the visiting mice and the rude rat?
What would Jesus say to the church mouse?
What lessons does the poem teach us?
