[Monday's Devotional] - Confession

Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners – of whom I am the worst.  But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his immense patience as an example for those who would believe in him and receive eternal life. 1 Timothy 1:15-16 [NIV]
Although the words above are written by Paul they might describe any one of us.  From time to time, I find myself feeling like the worst of sinners.  Sin separates us from God - if we are in a state of unconfessed sin, we cannot be at one with God or know his peace.  But the barrier of sin was removed by the sacrifice Jesus made for all of us, to re-unite us with our creator.  How is your status at present? - are you at peace with God, or is unconfessed sin making you feel separated from Him?

Is there someone you have hurt, who you need to say sorry to?

Is there something you are putting before God in your life?

Is there somewhere you need to go - to support someone, or renew a friendship, or help someone in need?

We need to take action, to give back control of our lives to the Holy Spirit, to put right the balance of our lives and head in the right direction.  Put Satan behind you and keep Jesus in front of you so you can follow in his footsteps.  If need be you may need to turn around in order to do this - we should not turn our backs on the Holy Spirit.

People who are ruled by their desires think only of themselves. Everyone who is ruled by the Holy Spirit thinks about spiritual things.  If our minds are ruled by our desires, we will die. But if our minds are ruled by the Spirit, we will have life and peace.  Our desires fight against God, because they do not and cannot obey God’s laws.  If we follow our desires, we cannot please God. Romans 8:5-8 [CEV]
Lord, help us to have minds ruled by the Spirit - not by our own desires.  Help us to come to you and receive your gracious gift of forgiveness and restoration. Amen.
