Change is Necessary My daughter has just begun a graduate trainee role with a financial services company as a Change Manager. I am still a bit vague about what this entails, even though she has attempted to explain it to me! Change is very rapid and very frequent in our society. How many family mealtimes have your conversations been around how things were in the old days? Like before the days of mobile phones, teenagers would do "three rings" from the phone box to indicate they wished to be picked up" or how "before Spotify or other music streaming services there were big black CDs or even dial-a-disc". We have to deal with social change, economic change, climate change, language change. Sometimes change is welcome, as in "a change is as good as a rest", but often it is feared. Change can feel like an enemy or it can be embraced if properly prepared for. It is often said that older people dislike change, but it is not just the elderly - many people fear change and actively resist it. Although a lot of our fear stems from not knowing what is coming next, worrying we won't understand it, or will get caught out and make mistakes, I think our main fear revolves around a sense of not being in control. The good news is, that as Christians, we don't need to be in control, because God is in control. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. Matthew 6:33-34 [NIV] Reflect on some of the changes you face in your family, home, work and church and talk to God about what excites you or what makes you fearful. Mairi Mowbray | |
