[Wednesday's Devotional] - Lost & Found

Lost & Found

The next verse is somewhat lost in translation:

'You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you.'
John 15:3 [NIV]

The Greek is a play on words, the same word can mean prune or make clean.  When you are purified you become pure, when you are pruned you become clean – clean is the result of pruning.  The disciples are ready to produce fruitful growth.

When we are going through difficult times, times of cleaning or pruning, it is easy to lose sight of this  - in God's eyes you are already clean.  God sees you as clean because you believe and trust in Jesus.  We need to hold this truth so that we don't become discouraged when we see painful areas of life that he is still working on.  Even though we may have a long way to go, God knows the end result.  We have this dichotomy of being a new creation but still being made new.

How strongly do we hold on to the words that Christ has spoken over us…

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.  I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you'
.
John 15:12-15 [NIV]
