Be Focused This week I would like to offer a few thoughts based on the beginning of Paul's first letter to the church at Corinth: Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ – their Lord and ours: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. I always thank my God for you because of his grace given you in Christ Jesus. For in him you have been enriched in every way – with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge – God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you. Therefore, you do not lack any spiritual gift as you eagerly wait for our Lord Jesus Christ to be revealed. He will also keep you firm to the end, so that you will be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. 1Corinthians 1:1- 9 [NIV] When we read this passage, it is impossible to miss Jesus' name –every sentence references Jesus. Paul's mind is on what Jesus has done and is doing. Jesus' actions are saturating Paul's thoughts and perhaps therefore this offers a lesson for us; just as the ploughman keeps his eyes looking forward to plough a straight furrow, we must keep focused on Jesus. We so easily get absorbed in the troubles of life – and life is challenging, heart-breaking and painful, but the advice is absolutely sound, whatever we are going through, we need to keep our focus on Jesus. …let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith Hebrews 12:1-2 [NIV] Lord help us to focus on you in the troubles of our lives.
