Barnabus: Son of Encouragement Now Joseph, a Levite of Cyprian birth, who was also called Barnabas by the apostles (which translated means Son of Encouragement), and who owned a tract of land, sold it and brought the money and laid it at the apostles' feet. Acts 4: 36-37 [NIV] This is the first mention of Barnabas in the Bible. We find lots of snippets on information about him spread through the book of Acts and a few references to him in Paul's letters. He was a Jew from Cyprus, and cousin of John Mark. When we first learn of him, he is in Jerusalem, where his Aunt Mary probably owned one of the houses that the early church met in. Some people think he may have even been one of the original seventy two disciples that Jesus sent out. He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith. Barnabas is very influential in Saul's (also known as Paul) ministry. Paul and Barnabas are companions in their early missionary work and Barnabas is active in planting and encouraging churches across Turkey and Cyprus. The Apostles nicknamed him Barnabas meaning "son of encouragement", consolation, comfort; someone close beside you who urges you on and encourages you. Who are the 'Barnabases' in your life, that encourage you and urge you on? Thank God for them. Guy Mowbray | |
