Being made better There are many great stories in the Bible of God asking weak people to step up to the plate and prove themselves. God has a habit of picking weak loners to do his work for him. David vs Goliath! Noah! Moses! Jesus picks the outcasts and lowest of society to work with and help spread his message of joy. I know one thing for sure. If I had being doing the picking, poor fishermen would have been the last people on my list to help kick start the New Order of things. There is pressure from society to get it right first time. Our company mantra is Quality Products, Right First Time, And Every Time. There is no room for failure. We are conditioned to pick the right team, to build success from successful people. There is no room in the modern world to build people up from scratch to let them learn by mistakes. This fear traps us. We start to choose people on face value. We pick people form CV's. I've done it myself. We don't try to look deeper into a person's abilities, because if they fail, it becomes a reflection on me. I had a boss in my 20's who advised me that If he has to dismiss somebody, he feels that he has failed, not the individual. What could he do better, what could he have done to help this person succeed? It's a piece of advice that I have kept with me. When something goes wrong, it's easy to jump up and react, it's harder to stay focused and understand the situation. It's the same with God, he chooses us not because we are perfect, but because we are failures and he moulds us to be better. Please note! To be better, not to be perfect. Every morning I look at my tired face in the shaving mirror and pray to God, "Help me understand what I did wrong yesterday and what I can do better at today to make someone's life just that bit easier" I don't think we can do any of it alone, we definitely need God to guide us on this. To help us look through our own fears of failure and help those who need it the most, despite the implications on ourselves. "'For I am the Lord, your God, who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, Do not fear; I will help you. Do not be afraid, for I myself will help you,' declares the Lord, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel." Isaiah 41:13-14 [NIV] Steve Fogo | |
