It was a great joy to be present at the adult baptisms on Palm Sunday at our church. At the end of the service as the newly baptised are sent out, they are asked to make declarations of how they will endeavour to worship, serve and live from this point on - the basics for Christian living. They emphasise the twin principles of prayer and action. Perhaps we can use them as a check on our own lives. So how well are we doing?
Will you continue in the apostles’ teaching and fellowship,
in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?
With the help of God, I will.
Lifelong learning is a phrase we hear often these days. What a good job it is that our learning was not complete when we left school or college! Were that the case I would never be able to use a computer! There is always a new skill to learn or a new application to put our knowledge to; a new problem to solve.
The baptism declaration is a direct quote from the story of the early church as told in the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:42). Essentially the priorities for Christians have not changed in 2000 years - learning, meeting together for worship, sharing communion and praying!
What priority do these activities have in your life? Has one or other been neglected recently? Is there something you could do to put this right? Make this the basis of your prayer.
