3 Saved by the Son Yesterday we saw how God chose us. But how can sinful people like ourselves become acceptable to God? Paul explains: In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace, that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding. Ephesians 1: 7, 8 [NIV] Paul uses language from the slave market. For a relative or friend to get a slave freed, they needed to pay money to the slave's owner. This was called 'redemption'. In the same way, Paul says, we were in bondage to sin, but we have been freed. Christ was the one who liberated us, and he paid for it with his life. As we saw yesterday, we bring nothing to our salvation. It is all God's work. The slave has no means to pay for his release. But God loved us so much that he gave himself in the person of Jesus. His death on the cross has released us from the consequences of our sins. This is grace, God's completely undeserved love or, if you like, God's Riches At Christ's Expense. Bishop Geoffrey Paul was given an honorary degree from Hull University. In his acceptance speech, he said "This degree is like the grace of God: I haven't earned it, I don't deserve it, but I'm glad I've got it!" Lord Jesus, thank you for your death for me on the cross. Thank you, that through your sacrifice, all that I have ever done wrong has been forgiven. David Long |
