[Friday's Devotional] - Asking God Questions is a Good Thing

Asking God Questions is a Good Thing

Most of the journey to the Promised Land, the children of Israel complained and murmured about the pain and trouble God was taking them through, especially in the wilderness.

They complained about how they missed Egypt where they used to eat meat, garlic and cucumbers. They complained about thirst - no water and sometimes having the water but behold, the water was bitter. Although this is understandable when faced with some challenges, there is always a better way of responding to these problems. Moses and Aaron seemed to be the only ones who knew how to handle difficult situations. They always went to God with their problems in prayer. Whenever, they asked genuine questions to God, He always answered.

In Numbers we read this account:
"The rabble with them began to crave other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, "If only we had meat to eat!  We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic.  But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!" Numbers 11: 4-6 [NIV]

And here is Moses' response and God's answer:

But Moses said, "Here I am among six hundred thousand men on foot, and you say, 'I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!'  Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?"
The Lord answered Moses, "Is the Lord's arm too short? Now you will see whether or not what I say will come true for you." Numbers 11: 21-23 [NIV]

As it turned out, God did a miracle in answer to Moses' prayers. He caused quails to fly to Israel's camps and there was provision of all the meat they wanted in abundance.

However, to those who complained, God's wrath came afterwards and many were struck with a plague and they died.

God loves being asked genuine questions. Another example is of King David who always asked God before going into battle or when the land was faced by famine. Even Mary the mother of Jesus asked God's Angel how she was going to have a baby without a man.

The bible says:
"If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.  But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.  That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.  Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do"
James 1:5-8 [NIV]
