Jesus walks on water We end our week through John with John 6:16-27. Yesterday we were remembering the significance of the Passover, and there are echoes of Exodus in our reading today too. When Jesus walks on water it reminds us of the Israelites crossing the Red sea, this was part of their journey to freedom. 'A strong wind was blowing and the waters grew rough. When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were frightened. But he said to them, 'It is I; don't be afraid.' John 6:18-20 [NIV] Use today's story as a meditation. There are many times in our lives – often unexpected – when the wind strengthens and the sea becomes rough. In those moments we might be aware of the presence of someone with us, which might frighten us, like it did the disciples. But if we listen through the roar of the waves and the wind, we might hear the voice of Jesus 'It is I; don't be afraid'. If we take Jesus on board then we might find ourselves back at the calm of the harbour. The Collect of the day: Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, yet without sin: give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit; and, as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. Emma Higgins | |
