I have a strong memory of being with my Dad when I was about 8 years old. It was cold and dark outside as he drove me back from school in his sports car. The rain was coming down fiercely, but I felt safe with my father. We didn’t say very much but there was a great sense of companionship and togetherness.
‘Father’ is a name that God gives for us to call him. It will bring up all sorts of different thoughts and emotions.
Jesus speaks about the fact that God our Father will give us good things, after all even imperfect human parents know what is best for their children and God knows even better what is best for us.
It’s all very well talking about God being our Father, but it can easily remain very distant unless we accept his invitation to know Him as Father. Knowing the Father’s love is very profound and moving – that we can call the God who made the Universe from nothing ‘Dad’:
“..by him we cry, ‘Abba, Father.’ Romans 8:15b [NIV]
